International space agencies meet to advance coordination in space exploration of Moon and Mars through the Global Exploration Strategy

Senior Agency Managers representing 21 agencies met virtually on 20 June 2023 with the purpose to foster and build upon coordinated efforts in space exploration of the Moon and Mars, consistent with the Global Exploration Strategy (GES) and Roadmap (GER).

2022 marked ISECG’s 15th year of existence and ISECG now numbers 27 agencies. Senior Agency Managers as part of the ISECG face-to-face meeting in Montreal, Canada (October 2022) had assigned ISECG agencies an action to review the GES based on its age and ISECG’s growth. The GES captured a vision created by the 14 founding space agencies which recognized that successful space exploration is best achieved through cooperative efforts among space agencies that share common goals and objectives in their exploration endeavours. Following a detailed review and discussion, ISECG Senior Agency Managers agreed upon the following statement summarizing the ISECG review:

“The ISECG, even with its larger size has reviewed Global Exploration Strategy and reconfirmed its validity in terms of goals, exploration objectives and cooperative approach toward sharing and benefiting from the exploration of space. Even after 15 years since its initial publication, the GES remains as important and relevant as when it was first drafted.”

This virtual meeting included representatives from AEB, AEM, ASA, ASI, CNES, CSA, CSIRO, DLR, ESA, GISTDA, ISRO, JAXA, KARI, LSA, NASA, NOSA, NZSA, POLSA, PTS, SSO, UKSA.

ISECG’s senior agency managers remarked upon the outputs of the seven ISECG working groups and Tiger Team in the areas of space technology, science, strategic communications, architectures, exploration roadmap, emerging space agencies, commercialization and benefits of space exploration.

A particular emphasis was given to the recognition of emerging space agencies and their role with established space agencies. Other points included coordination to advance LEO commercialization and articulating further, the benefits of space explorations to the Moon and Mars..

Senior Agency Managers concluded that ISECG continues to foster valuable international collaborations building global approaches and projecting the benefits of space exploration.
